Frequently Asked Questions

1. Am I required to audition?

Yes. Admission to the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance requires every candidate to complete a satisfactory performance and/or portfolio audition, in addition to normal university admission. This audition also serves as a basis of consideration for awarding theatre arts scholarships.

2. When should I audition?

Students complete the audition process during the fall or early spring semester prior to fall entry. Auditions are conducted during published dates.

3. Where should I audition?

All candidates are required to schedule their auditions for one of the published audition dates. Out-of-state applicants may utilize one of the alternative dates and sites or send a videotaped audition to the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance.

4. Should I wait to be accepted by the university before auditioning?

University admissions procedures and theatre arts auditions take place simultaneously. You are encouraged to initiate application to the university as soon as possible. December 1 is the academic and talent scholarship priority deadline. Please be advised that theatre arts scholarships cannot be awarded until admission to the university is complete.

5. How are drama scholarships awarded?

The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance administers talent-based scholarships annually for theatre arts majors. These awards vary according to the student’s theatrical skills, potential for continued development and academic progress, and the needs of the department.

6. When is the scholarship application deadline?

The theatre arts scholarship deadline is December 1. The priority deadline for academic scholarships is December 1.

7. What should I prepare for my audition?

The acting audition is for students primarily interested in performance. Prepare a short dramatic presentation, two minutes in length. The presentation may be contemporary or classical, and dramatic or comedic. The portfolio review is for students primarily interested in design, technical theatre, or management. It consists of the presentation of any design/technical experience and/or any artwork of the student, including drawings, crafts, paintings, prompt scripts, or photos. The interview with the Theatre Arts Admissions Committee will cover skills and interests not covered in an audition or portfolio review.

8. What should I prepare if I must send a videotaped audition?

Videotapes of two minutes will be accepted from those unable to attend in person and must be received no later than November 29, 2007. Tapes must be labeled with your name; begin with an introduction stating your name and title of selection only; include a two-minute monologue; and close with a one-minute statement on why you want to be a theatre arts major at Loyola University New Orleans.

9. Who will hear my audition?

A panel of theatre arts faculty members will adjudicate your audition. Comments and ratings are for internal use only, and the auditions are closed to the public.

10. Do I have to major in drama in order to be considered for a drama scholarship?

Yes. Theatre Arts scholarship recipients must major in theatre arts.

11. Do I need to audition to minor in drama?

No, minors may simply declare their minor. Minors are not eligible for theatre arts scholarships.

12. When is my drama audition/ admissions application due?

The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance must receive audition applications two weeks or more prior to the audition date. Students will receive a confirmation and information, including time of audition, prior to their audition date.
