College Is Possible
Paying for college is a pressing concern to anyone with children of any age and important aspects of the college cost story are not widely understood. In an effort to close the gap in public understanding of college cost, Loyola University New Orleans has joined the Coalition of America's Colleges and Universities in the "College Is Possible" campaign. "College Is Possible," is a national grassroots campaign sponsored by the American Council on Education and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities that aims to educate the public about the full range of possibilities and options that make a college education possible and affordable.
Loyola is one of 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide that are working together to carry the "College Is Possible" message. The "College Is Possible" campaign features a website that helps explain the intricacies of college cost, price, subsidy and affordability. Go to: www.CollegeIsPossible.org for more information about federal and states grants and low interest loans.
You may also contact the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243 to request a "College Is Possible" brochure (available in both English and Spanish) and other useful information on student aid and college planning.
Louisiana's College Savings Program
START is the Student Tuition Assistance and Revenue Trust Program, an innovative college savings program with tax incentives designed to assist parents and grandparents in preparing for the cost of providing their children and grandchildren a college education. Because most parents worry about the cost of educating their children beyond high school, the Louisiana Legislature enacted the START Program in 1995 to help make education affordable and accessible to all families. An education is an investment in the future and will provide financial security for the children of Louisiana.
How It Works? Accounts may be opened for beneficiaries of any age, at any time during the year. A savings plan can be tailored for each child (the beneficiary of the account), depending upon where and when the beneficiary will enroll in college. In addition to earning interest, accounts may qualify for state-awarded Tuition Assistance Grants. Deposits and grants are invested by the State Treasurer to earn the highest rate of interest possible, consistent with security of your funds. Interest earnings grow free of state tax and federal taxes are deferred, which increases the net return on your deposits. The account value will grow over time, providing funds to pay the beneficiary's higher education expenses at the postsecondary institution of choice.
Since there are no fees for enrolling your child in START all of you deposits are invested to generate earnings. Think how your investment will safely grow for your child's education.
